Ember

Everyone loves Prince Charming. They have to—he’s cursed. Every man must respect him. Every woman must desire him. One look, and all is lost.

Ember would rather carve out a piece of her soul than be enslaved by passions not her own. She turns to the dark arts to save her heart and becomes the one woman in the kingdom able to resist the Prince’s Charm.

Poor girl. If Ember had spent less time studying magic and more time studying human nature, she might have guessed that a man who gets everything and everyone he wants will come to want the one woman he cannot have.

Contest Entries
Updated December 31, 2007

My first published story, the novella "Like a Thief in the Night" started as a 200 word contest entry for Dionne Galace's (a.k.a. Bam's) monthly writing contest. My current lack of web content has inspired me to post all of my entries.

Girl Saves Boy
The challenge was to write a scene where the woman saves the man in 400 words or less. Possibly due to the influence of Girl Genius, I was in a comic book / steam punk frame of mind. This 401 word scene is the result.

Marked
Ink can last a lifetime when set just beneath the skin. One look, sharp as a needle, and he was under hers. One look, and she was marked.

The challenge was to describe a dangerous hero in 300 words or less. This scene relates to my WIP Marked.

Bright
Love doesn't always bring out the best in people. Sometimes, it brings out the beast, instead.

The challenge was to portray an argument between lovers in 200 words. This entry became a scene in my WIP, Bright.

Heat
The challenge was to portray heat, both in setting and between two people. 200 words or less. This one actually won the contest, netting me a $50 Amazon gift certificate. Strangely, this is also the only one I haven't been inspired to turn into a longer story.
